NYSSMA Major Organization Ratings
South Huntington has consistently earned Gold With distinction and Gold ratings with NYSSMA Adjudicators. In addition we also value a hard working group that earns Silver, Bronze or even participates on the "Festival" level. It is the thrill of the performance of a difficult piece of music that drives our teachers and students to excellence on any level.
South Huntington is among the strong Music programs found on Long Island. Walt Whitman High School offers a comprehensive music education to its students with opportunities in Jazz and Stage bands, Pit Orchestras, Marching Band, Chamber Ensembles, and Wind Ensemble.
Visual Arts:
Our Visual Arts program is fully comprehensive, beginning at the kindergarten level through senior year. South Huntington students have won local, State and National awards on every grade level.
Students visit local museums and study with highly qualified teachers who themselves served as museum liaisons and professional artists.
Course work includes exploration of a wide variety of mediums such as drawing, painting, , photography, computer graphics and animation, fashion design, and studio art.
Artists in Residence occasionally work with our students and teachers to bring fresh artistic components into the studios.
Additionally the Art Honor Society at Walt Whitman High School provides students with the opportunity to augment the day program.
